Electric Indigo is the DJ-update of the
man-machine music-idea: the combination of human funkiness and
a non-stop running 808: Electric Indigo kicked dance floors in
31 countries and 134 cities in Europe, North-America and Asia,
she worked as a radio DJ , music-producer and record shop-manager.
Like nearly no other DJ Electric Indigo constantly represents
an intelligent & and abstract techno-ideal.
1989 - 1997: She started her DJ-career 1989 in Vienna, Austria
with jazz and funk sets, but soon the Detroit and Chicago techno-sound
became her style. This brought her to the famous Hard Wax record
store in Berlin, Germany. In this central institution of the world-wide
techno network Electric Indigo was responsible for purchase and
communication from 1993 until 1996, then she moved back to Vienna,
where she built up her own studio.
1998: she started indigo:inc - a server for extended party experiences
and multimedia events. This was also the time when she created
female:pressure, which is an international database for female
DJs, producers and visual artists who work in the fields of electronic
music. female:pressure is a unique, web-based resource of female
talent all around the globe and has been built to enhance mutual
support and communication as well as the general level of information
about female artists.
1999 - 2000: From May 99 until the end of February 2000 she worked
for the alternative TV station TIV in Vienna. She hosted the show
"TIVIT" under the pseudonym "indigo:inc", a weekly one hour information
program about information technology, software developments, technical
innovations, open source, privacy and related civil rights. From
May 2000 until January 2001 Electric Indigo provided music and
Internet news for the Austrian radio station FM4's web appearance.
In summer 2000 she was one of the lectors for the Red Bull Music
Academy in Dublin / Ireland, talking about networking and use
of the Internet in the music biz.
2001: was the year for her to relaunch female:pressure with it's
own web address - a decision coherent with the growing self-dynamic
and the more independent character of this network. Apart from
touring more extensively than ever, she has also been increasingly
engaged in cultural and political life on a structural and theoretical
level: frequently invited for panel discussions ["techno visionen"
at the spring one festival, "white trash girl" organized by volkstanz,
"popkultur unter female pressure" organized by fmz, to name a
few]. From July 2001 until July 2003 she was member of the board
of mica, the Music Information Center Austria.
2002: Electric Indigo started to work intensively on music again
and a new collaboration with Mia Zabelka, Vienna's most interesting
e-violinist, was born: Colophony Circuit - a live-project that
merges experimental electronic violin improvisations and Indigo's
energetic electro-techno sound. These concerts have mostly taken
place in and near Vienna due to the amount of equipment necessary
and in some sort of "high cultural" context: the combination of
different styles and the virtuousity of Zabelka's violin playing
need an attentive audience, moods and beats can be suddenly changed
and broken. End of May 2002 DJ Electric Indigo was invited to
play on the main stage of Detroit's Electronic Music Fest, a great
honor for her since she has been truly inspired and motivated
by Detroit's music! She also has been working on the soundtrack
for the video "Tesla 21" by Vienna based artist Marko Lulic, that
she performed live in the Belgrade Tesla museum in July 2002.
"The New Electro Times", her mix-CD for the french label Leitmotiv
Records, was released in November 2002.
2003: After playing live with Colophony Circuit several times
Electric Indigo started to play solo live gigs in 2003, occasionally
supported by Barca Baxant, a singer from Vienna. Performances
include the moving patterns festival in New York, Ultraschall
/ Munich and Loft / Barcelona. Consequently, she developed club-compatible
solo-versions of the existing Colophony Circuit material and -
to be able to travel - she switched from a pure "old-school" setup
to a computer / software centered stage equipment with the help
of ableton live. In June, Indigo decided to start her own record
label indigo:inc, mainly for her productions, the first two records
- six-trak ep 1 & 2 came out in autumn / winter 2003. In October
the long awaited double-mix-CD "female:pressure presents: Acid
Maria & Electric Indigo: Welttour" finally came out on the German
label true people. She also made a remix for Reinhard Voigt's
"How We Rock", released on kompakt 91.
2004: remixing continues for Electric Indigo: She remixed Gwenn
Labarta's "Vortexx Voice Track" for the French label umf, she
made a mix of Microthol's "Sexy Lady" for indigo:inc 3, both to
be released in June. She will do a mix for the French band Trisomie
21 and the Austrian formation Silicone Pumpgun. In spring 2004
she was again invited to participate at the moving patterns festival
in New York City as well as in Bucharest. she also started a new
live-project with Mia Zabelka: colophony circuit featuring Dorit
